At One-Room Education, we believe that true learning is holistic and integrated into daily life. In our previous article, we introduced HEAL (Holistic Educational Approach to Life) as a framework for real, meaningful education. Today, we delve deeper into the distinction between HEAL as a philosophy and HEL (Holistic Educational Lifestyle) as the practical application of that philosophy. Think of it this way: One is the map; the other is the daily walk.
What Is HEAL?
HEAL is more than just a set of principles; it’s a way of seeing and understanding education. Rooted in classical learning, faith, developmental psychology, and holistic living, HEAL reframes education as formation, not just the acquisition of information. It emphasizes the development of the whole person—mind, body, spirit, emotions, and relationships.
The HEAL framework rests on four essential pillars:
- Holistic: Life doesn’t come divided by subject. Neither should education. True learning embraces every aspect of what makes us human.
- Educational: We value academics and the understanding of classical educational themes and topics combined with their mastery. However, education is much more than facts. It’s curiosity, courage, humility, and wonder.
- Approach: HEAL helps you build a lifestyle that reflects your beliefs, honors your children’s individuality, and supports growth in the real, messy, meaningful world.
- Life: We don’t “do school” and then live. We live, and through that, we learn. HEAL embraces the sacredness of the everyday and the lessons waiting in ordinary moments.
What Is HEL (Holistic Educational Lifestyle)?

HEL is what HEAL looks like in your actual home. It’s not a rigid system but a flexible, adaptable way of living that shifts with the seasons, the ages of your children, and the unique needs of your family. HEL emphasizes rhythm over routine, wonder over worksheets, and character over checklists.
In a HEL lifestyle, education is integrated into every aspect of daily life. It’s not something that happens in a separate space or time but is woven into the fabric of your family’s existence. This approach allows for a more natural, organic learning experience that honors the individuality of each child and the rhythm of family life.
Why the Distinction Matters
Many families adopt the ideas of HEAL without fully understanding how to live them out in their daily lives. This can lead to frustration, burnout, and a sense of failure. HEL, on the other hand, is flexible and adaptable, allowing families to align their beliefs with their actions in a way that is sustainable and meaningful.
The freedom comes from understanding that HEAL provides the vision and the compass, while HEL offers the practical, tactical rhythm for daily living. By distinguishing between the two, families can avoid the pitfalls of performative education and embrace a more holistic, integrated approach to learning.
Everyday HEL Examples
Let’s look at a few everyday examples of what HEL might look like in a family’s life:
- Morning Devotions and Family Breakfast: This time can be used for social studies, theology, and habit formation. Discussing current events over breakfast, reading from a devotional, and engaging in meaningful conversation can all be part of a holistic educational experience.
- Gardening and Meal Planning: These activities can be used to teach science and math. Planting a garden, measuring ingredients, and understanding the science behind growth and nutrition can all be integrated into daily learning.
- Bedtime Story: Reading a bedtime story can be a time for literacy, bonding, and emotional growth. Choosing stories that reflect your family’s values and discussing them with your children can deepen their understanding and appreciation for literature.
The power of HEL lies in doing less, more intentionally. By integrating education into daily life, families can create a more meaningful, sustainable learning experience that honors the whole person.
HEAL vs HEL Summary
| HEAL (Philosophy) | HEL (Lifestyle) |
|---|---|
| Vision | Practice |
| Compass | Daily walk |
| Unchanging | Adaptable |
| Strategic lens | Tactical rhythm |
Consider This…
As you reflect on your own educational journey, consider this question: “Where in your life are you already living HEL without realizing it?” Perhaps it’s in the way you read to your children at bedtime or the conversations you have over dinner. Whatever it is, embrace it and build on it.
