5 Steps to Simplify Your Homeschool Planning

Planning a homeschool year can feel like a huge task, but with the right approach, you can streamline the process and start with confidence. These five steps are designed to take you from feeling overwhelmed to organized. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to simplify an established routine, these tips will help you create a manageable, effective plan for the year ahead.
Step 1: Set Clear Goals – Define what you want to achieve this year.
This applies to both yourself and your students. Sit down with a pen and paper to brainstorm what goals you want to achieve this year, why those goals matter, and the actionable steps you can take to work toward them.
For students, this might mean working on a new life skill or progressing toward mastery of an academic topic. Whatever the goal, set measurable milestones along the way, and remember to celebrate those everyday wins.
Step 2: Choose Key Subjects – Focus on core areas and expand from there.
For lower grade levels, I recommend a loop-style schedule (example below):
| Day of the Week | Topic(s) of Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Reading/Writing/ELA |
| Tuesday | History/Civics/Economics |
| Wednesday | Math |
| Thursday | Science |
| Friday | Real-world review of all topics |
| Saturday | Volunteer |
| Sunday | Religious Studies/Rest |
Each day builds on the others. For example, center History/Civics/Econ lessons around the book or passage you read during ELA, use applied math to reinforce Econ concepts, and practice writing and math in Science. Then, take these concepts into the real world to reinforce learning.
If you have questions about this type of scheduling, I cover it in-depth in my upcoming 12-week Foundations for Homeschool Mastery program.
Step 3: Find Your Resources – Select materials that match your goals.
Whether through the One-Room Classroom’s self-guided courses or other materials, your curriculum should fit your family, not the other way around.
Choose resources that are compatible with each student’s needs, then bring them together in a family-style setting whenever possible. This approach can help everyone progress at a faster pace than if you separate by age or grade level.

Step 4: Map Out a Schedule – Create a flexible plan that fits your family.
A schedule should be written down and accessible to all family members. It should be detailed enough to cover appointments but flexible enough to allow for occasional mental health days we all need.
I recommend the Tools4Wisdom Planner to help stay organized. I’ve used this planner in the One-Room schoolhouse for nearly 10 years, and it’s been an invaluable tool for my family. Get the planner here.
Step 5: Track Progress – Set up a simple system to monitor learning.
👈 To make this easy, I’ve created a FREE PDF goal setting and progress tracker that you can download for both you and your students.
If you’d like more resources like this, check out the Foundations for Homeschool Mastery program, which includes a homeschool planner I created as a gift to fellow homeschool parents. In this program, I guide you through using the planner to build the homeschool experience you’ve envisioned.
With these 5 basic steps, you’ll find that homeschool planning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, adapt as you go, and remember to enjoy the journey!
